Nick Saban used his opening press conference of championship week to scold media members who thinks this week’s game in Atlanta may not matter much because the Tide has already locked up a playoff spot.<\/p>\n

In part, Saban told the media, “Y’all put everything about the playoffs. That’s all you care about. You don’t care about any bowl games. You don’t care about any teams in the country that aren’t in the playoffs. I’d really rather not have any more questions about ‘Is it OK to lose this game?’ It’s never OK to lose a game.”<\/p>\n

Who’s Saban really mad at? The people who made this idea of games being insignificant are those who decided college football needed a four-team playoff. That wasn’t the media or even the fans.<\/p>\n

You never heard this talk when the old BCS system was in play.<\/p>\n

If you really want to ramp up these discussions about regular-season and even conference championship games being irrelevant then expand to an eight-team playoff. Maybe then college football will be like the the NFL or even college basketball.<\/p>\n

I hope it never comes to that. But if it does, it’ll be the fault of those who continue to claim they want to maintain the importance of the regular season.<\/p>\n
