Every week on the Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner, Mark, Lee and Michael will talk to a local area high school coach to get the scoop on what’s going on with their team, how our local schools are faring on their respective pushes to bring Blue Maps back to the Gulf Coast, and everything in between.

In this week’s edition, we caught up with McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets head coach David Faulkner ahead of his team’s massive game against UMS Wright which will decide the region championship in Class AA Region 1 to gain home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

“We have improved considerably in a number of areas,” Faulkner said on his team throughout the season.

The Jackets have an elite running game with numerous backs who can tote the rock depending on who the hot hand is, and Coach Faulkner says the biggest problem is only having one ball for all of them. Even though they all want carries though, he says the entire room has been great teammates all season long and all root for each other to do what’s best for the team.

They have also won at the line of scrimmage with an elite defensive line which is one of the best in the area as well as a very strong offensive line.

“The further up you get up in classification, the more important the line of scrimmage is, and they have really come along nicely all season long,” Faulkner said. “[The offensive line] all had to play as sophomores last year and took their lumps, and now they understand how everything works and they have a lot of reps. They had some rough spots last year but came back here as veterans.”

With both teams at 7-1, it should be a tremendous night of football which will decide a region championship at The Lipp, and Coach Faulkner is going to have his team ready for the challenge.
