Every week on the Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner, Mark, Lee and Michael will talk to a local area high school coach to get the scoop on what’s going on with their team, how our local schools are faring on their respective pushes to bring Blue Maps back to the Gulf Coast, and everything in between.

In this week’s edition, we caught up with Spanish Fort Toros assistant Nathan McDaniel, who joined Chase Smith’s staff after more than a decade as a head coach in the area including five years as the head coach of the Elberta Warriors. McDaniel joined Spanish Fort as an assistant as well as the defensive backs coach, and it’s clear he is enjoying himself after stepping back into an assistant role.

“I just needed a little bit of a break, and I’m falling in love with coaching again and I needed that,” he said. “I’m having an absolute blast and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. Being in the meeting room with those kids and being able to just focus on the position has been awesome.”

The Toros are one of the hottest teams in the area with four wins in a row that have included two shutouts and a total of just 14 points allowed by the defense. The last four games of the season however are an absolute schedule gauntlet, starting Thursday night with a road trip to Theodore before hosting Gulf Shores and Saraland then wrapping up with a game at St. Paul’s.

McDaniel and his team are excited for the challenge ahead and know that while it won’t be easy, this is exactly what you play big time high school football for. Spanish Fort is locked in and ready to attack the day, and it’s clear that McDaniel has made a wonderful addition to the Toros coaching staff.
