Week six has come and gone on the Gulf Coast, and with it, high school football season is officially in full swing with the best time of year that we all wait for finally now here!<\/p>\n
Every week during the season, Pigskin Pete and his crew on the Friday night Green and Phillips Pigskin Scoreboard show select an athlete from one of the teams that we cover and name them the Bryant Bank Player of the Week for their outstanding performance and helping their team to get the victory.<\/p>\n
This week, the honor goes to St. Michael Cardinals running back Nygel Mitchell for his massive performance in the victory this past Friday against Bayside Academy. Mitchell toted the rock 35 times and rushed for a mind-boggling 240 yards and four touchdowns in a very impressive 37-19 victory with quarterback Gunner Rivers still out.<\/p>\n
Mitchell has stepped up in a huge way through five games this season, with 889 yards rushing (177.8\/game) and 9 touchdowns on the ground.<\/p>\n
“Probably not the volume of runs and carries, but yeah I knew he was gonna have a big year,” Philip Rivers said when asked whether or not he expected this kind of season from Mitchell. “He loves to play football.”<\/p>\n
The entire Cardinals team has stepped up around junior quarterback Marshall Pitre, who is getting better and better each week he gets more comfortable, with performances like that from Mitchell certainly making things a little bit easier on him.<\/p>\n
The victory got the Cardinals to 2-3 on the season, and in a year when all private schools make the playoffs, St. Michael is able to bring Rivers along slowly as they figure out how to pick up victories without him and Mitchell continues to be an absolute star.<\/p>\n
The Cardinals will host Faith Academy this week.<\/p>\n
