Week three has come and gone on the Gulf Coast, and with it, high school football season is officially in full swing with the best time of year that we all wait for finally now here!<\/p>\n
Every week during the season, Pigskin Pete and his crew on the Friday night Green and Phillips Pigskin Scoreboard show select an athlete from one of the teams that we cover and name them the Bryant Bank Player of the Week for their outstanding performance and helping their team to get the victory.<\/p>\n
This week, the honor went to Gulf Shores two-way star and Jacksonville State commit Elijah Malone for his performance in the Dolphins 34-24 upset victory over Saraland which was the Spartans first defeat at home since 2020. With seven carries for 133 yards on the ground including three touchdown runs of 6, 26 and 77 yards. He also blocked a field goal which was returned for a Gulf Shores touchdown in the fourth quarter and helped contribute tackles to a defense which did not allow a point in the fourth quarter.<\/p>\n
After winning 41 straight games at home, it was going to take a spectacular performance to defeat Saraland, and Malone and the Dolphins were able to do that.<\/p>\n
Gulf Shores head coach Mark Hudspeth offered praise to Malone, saying he is is excited for what could be next for a Dolphins team that is now 3-0.<\/p>\n
“I’m proud of the team and proud of our school,” Hudspeth said. “Elijah is really affecting the game. He’s not our primary running back but he is one of our top athletes…he also returns punts, he plays wildcat quarterback, he’s all over the field for us right now and making a big impact on the team.”<\/p>\n
Gulf Shores will face Blount and Murphy after now taking control in 5A Region 1 before a bye week and the tail end of their season.<\/p>\n
