Week two has come and gone on the Gulf Coast, and with it, high school football season is officially in full swing with the best time of year that we all wait for finally now here!<\/p>\n
Every week during the season, Pigskin Pete and his crew on the Friday night Green and Phillips Pigskin Scoreboard show select an athlete from one of the teams that we cover and name them the Bryant Bank Player of the Week for their outstanding performance and helping their team to get the victory.<\/p>\n
This week, the honor went to Blount Leopards running back Keevaughn Johnson after his absolutely massive night in his team’s thrilling triple overtime victory over B.C. Rain by a score of 44-43. Johnson put up some jaw dropping stats with 307 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries including a 10-yard touchdown reception in overtime. He was responsible for four two-point conversions and even added two tackles on defense as well.<\/p>\n
The victory marked the first for new Blount head coach Gus Smith<\/p>\n
“He set the tone at the very beginning of the game with a 25-yard run to open the game where he just drug their team down the field to establish the run,” Smith said on Johnson. “He was tough to deal with for them the whole night.”<\/p>\n
Next week for the Leopards, region play will begin with a matchup against Murphy before a road trip to Gulf Shores and hosting Spanish Fort. After a great start to the year, perhaps Blount can rattle off some region wins and take a huge step as a program after a statement victory like they earned on Friday night.<\/p>\n
