{"id":1184369,"date":"2026-06-12T06:20:52","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T12:20:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wnsp.com\/wordpress\/?p=1184369"},"modified":"2026-06-12T06:21:41","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T12:21:41","slug":"philip-rivers-to-be-honored-by-alabama-sports-writers-association-with-presidents-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wnsp.com\/wordpress\/philip-rivers-to-be-honored-by-alabama-sports-writers-association-with-presidents-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Philip Rivers to Be Honored by Alabama Sports Writers Association with Presidents\u2019 Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Legendary former NFL quarterback and\u00a0Alabama native Philip Rivers\u00a0\u2014 now the head coach at St. Michael Catholic in\u00a0Fairhope\u00a0\u2014 is being honored with a very special award.<\/p>\n<p>Every year, the Alabama Sports Writers Association gives out the Presidents\u2019 Award to a coach who best exemplifies commitment to community service activities and \u201coverall excellence\u201d as well as embodying the spirt of athletics in the state. This year, Rivers is going to be the recipient.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Philip coming here as a high school football coach gave our program instant credibility but also helped shine a bright light on student-athletes all over this state,\u201d St. Michael athletic director and defensive coordinator Simon Cortopassi\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/highschoolsports\/2026\/06\/lets-stinkin-go-philip-rivers-to-be-honored-with-prestigious-alabama-sports-writers-award.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told AL.com<\/a>. \u201cHe\u2019s not only one of the greatest football minds in the world, but one of the greatest people and mentors students could possibly have. He\u2019s also an unbelievable motivator. He has an unbelievable knack of getting the most out of everyone around him whether it\u2019s a player or a coach or whoever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rivers has coached his son Gunner the last three years, who is the starting quarterback and one of the best players in the state, with more of his children on the way including his younger son Peter who is also a quarterback.<\/p>\n<p>As Gunner enters his senior year, the Rivers boys get the chance to have one more year together and Philip\u2019s commitment to the area is now being honored.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was honored to be in that group of 26 semifinalists, but I wasn\u2019t holding my breath that it was going to happen this year,\u201d Rivers said on the award. \u201cIf and when I could ever be among that group, I will certainly be humbled and honored and thankful, but I don\u2019t count down the days and years and worry about that to be honest\u2026Being from the state of Alabama always has been something I was proud of throughout my playing career on the West Coast all those years.
