In this week’s edition, we caught up with new Orange Beach girl’s basketball head coach Terry Canova on his surprising decision to leave UMS Wright following a very successful career there that included 13 Sweet 16 appearances, nine Elite 8s and three final fours.<\/p>\n

“We were very familiar with Orange Beach’s basketball program, but what we didn’t know was just how great the facilities were and the investment in their students…it’s special with so much potential,” Canova said. “I think the thing we saw is their attention to detail with the new facility and the fact that every sport matters.<\/p>\n

“It’s an opportunity of a lifetime and my wife and I are looking at this as a life-changing opportunity.”<\/p>\n

Multiple topics were dived into including allowing and encouraging players to play multiple sports, his new assistant coach Amanda Niehoff who leaves Saraland to join Canova down the shore, reflecting on his career at UMS Wright, and much more.<\/p>\n

Canova was asked about whether or not players from UMS would try to transfer to Orange Beach, and he firmly said he would encourage them to give the new coach a chance and play for whoever it may be for a year before simply packing it up and moving elsewhere.<\/p>\n

His next steps and the Makos program clearly become something worth following over the coming years.<\/p>\n
