Auburn may have made a serious push to land one of the SEC\u2019s top quarterbacks during the offseason, according to a new report that suggests the Tigers were potentially behind a major transfer offer to South Carolina\u2019s LaNorris Sellers.<\/p>\n
According to reporting from\u00a0The Athletic\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0Bruce Feldman, South Carolina Gamecocks quarterback LaNorris Sellers \u2014 who broke out last season to establish himself as arguably the best quarterback in the conference and one of the best in the nation \u2014\u00a0was offered approximately $8 million<\/a>\u00a0to enter the transfer portal.<\/p>\n That\u2019s a staggering number even in today\u2019s day and age. But, the point is moot because Sellers turned down the figure in order to stay at South Carolina.<\/p>\n That has not stopped fans across the conference from trying to speculate who it was that made the offer \u2014 and Auburn makes a lot of sense.<\/p>\n The Tigers ended up with former Oklahoma gunslinger Jackson Arnold for a number that was reported to be around $2.5 million, but taking the swing for Sellers would be an admirable attempt to go from the worst quarterback situation in the conference to instantly the best.<\/p>\n We may never know for certain, but speculation that it could have been Auburn going hard after Sellers to bring the most talented quarterback since Cam Newton to The Plains would have been an absolutely wild story<\/p>\n Headed into his second year as a starter, Sellers is expected to have the Gamecocks competing for a spot in the College Football Playoff this year.<\/p>\n Arnold on the other hand is trying to restart his career after things bottomed out last season with the Sooners in his first year as a starter.<\/p>\n The former five-star recruit is going to try to erase all doubt that even if Sellers was in the equation, he is the best possible quarterback to lead the Tigers into the year.<\/p>\n It\u2019s hard not to wonder though what could have been if Auburn was able to land Sellers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
