Steve Spurrier to speak at Mayor’s Luncheon

spurrierluncheonMOBILE, AL (WNSP) — The Head Ball Coach is headed to the Port City.

On Friday, the Dollar General Bowl announced that former Heisman winner and national championship coach Steve Spurrier will speak at the Mayor’s Luncheon on Thursday, Dec. 22, as part of the Dollar General Bowl festivities.

According to the press release from the Dollar General Bowl, “Spurrier compiled a 228-89-2 (.718) won-loss record in 25-plus seasons as a major college head coach and was awarded nine conference Coach of the Year awards throughout his career.

In 1966, Spurrier won the Heisman award as a Florida Gator, and following that career, he spent a decade with the San Fransisco 49ers. He returned to Florida, where he became a national champion head coach and the first Heisman winner to coach a Heisman winner (Danny Wuerffel, 1996).

In his 12 years with the Gators, he “won six Southeastern Conference championships, one national title and finished ranked in the nation’s top 10 nine times. His record at Florida was an amazing 122-27-1 (.817).”

Spurrier left to coach the Washington Redskins, and two years later returned to coach the South Carolina Gamecocks. He coached them to a 86-49 record (.637) over the decade he was there, and he became the fourth coach to win 100 or more games as an SEC coach against SEC teams.

This September, the field at Florida’s Ben Hill Griffin Stadium was named in his honor.

The Dollar General Bowl Mayor’s Luncheon will be held at noon at the Mobile Convention Center. Individual tickets for this event are $30, and more information can be found at the Dollar General Bowl website.
