South gets votes in coaches’ poll–again

south-coaches-pollFor the second time not only this season, but in the history of the program, South Alabama football is being mentioned in the weekly Top 25 coaches poll.

South Alabama earned two poll points in the USA Today Amway Coaches poll released on Sunday, meaning the Jags received either one vote for 24th or two votes for 25th.

South Alabama is 3-2 after beating previous No. 19 San Diego State 42-24 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium Saturday. Quarterback Cole Garvin stepped in for injured starter Dallas Davis, and after going 16-of-21 with 242 yards and three touchdowns, he was named the Sun Belt Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week.

It’s worth noting that both head coach Joey Jones and Aztec head coach Rocky Long are on the list of coaches’ poll voters. Still, the win was South’s first win over a ranked opponent, and it snapped the nation’s second-longest active win streak.

Before Sunday, USA received three votes in the Top 25 poll released on Sept. 6, following a 21-20 victory at Mississippi State in its season opener. That victory was the Jaguars’ first over an SEC opponent.

With a 41-40 overtime win over Nicholls State the week before, the Jags are 3-0 in non-conference play, and only have LSU left to play in November. However, they are 0-2 in Sun Belt play after losing to Georgia Southern at home and at Louisiana-Lafayette.

South Alabama has a bye this week before traveling to Arkansas State on Oct. 15.
