SEC and ACC trade dominance in football and basketball

Clemson beats Alabama in the football national championship game.

Now South Carolina has eliminated Duke from the NCAA basketball tournament.

So, have we all had it wrong? Is the ACC a football league and the SEC a basketball conference?

I wouldn’t go that far just yet, but there’s no questioning the fact that the SEC has had a better tournament than the ACC so far in this tournament.

While eight of the nine ACC teams have been eliminated, the SEC still has three of its five entrants alive in the Sweet 16.

Put another way, the Vegas line for SEC wins in the NCAA tournament was 5 and a half. The league has already notched seven wins, with Kentucky, Florida and South Carolina still very much in the hunt to add to that total.

We may not even have to wait for the Final 4 to see the best of each conference square off. With one more win each, North Carolina and Kentucky will meet in Memphis.

A win by the Wildcats wouldn’t make the SEC the kings of college basketball. But it would certainly eliminate the once-vaunted ACC from consideration.
