MLB Draft 2017: Thirty-five Alabama players taken

MOBILE, AL (WNSP) — The 2017 MLB Draft is in the books, and 35 players representing Alabama have the chance to enter the big leagues.

Two of them were among the first 30 taken—Huntsville native Kyle Wright by way of Vanderbilt and McGill-Toolen’s Bubba Thompson. In the second round, another pair came off the board—Vestavia Hills pitcher Caden Lemons and St. James alum M.J. Melendez.

Auburn pitcher Keegan Thompson was the first Tiger off the board. He was taken in the third round by the Cubs.

The first player connected with South was not an alum but a signee—T.R. Miller pitcher JoJo Booker. He and his Tiger teammate Hunter Brittain both signed with the Jags, and both were signed by the Angels.

Jared Barnes was taken in the eighth round and became the first South Alabama player to get the call this year. Jaguars Randy Bell and Matthew Peacock were also drafted, in rounds 10 and 23, respectively.

Two Crimson Tide players came off the board in the 26th and 27th rounds—Garrett Suchey and Chandler Taylor. Former Baker and University of Mobile pitcher Lukas Young was taken by the Red Sox in round 21.

Below is the list of draftees who played high school ball in the Mobile-Baldwin County area, signed or played for South Alabama, played for Auburn and Alabama or some combination of the three.
