McGill star earns USA Today ‘Top’ honors
Williams was awarded the Super 25 Top Star award, as voted by USA Today High School Sports readers, following the Yellow Jackets’ 45-12 win over Blount.
“I was challenged this week,” Williams told AL.com. “I didn’t have a great game last week (against Foley on Sept. 16). Coaches wanted me to pick it up this week. I just tried my best to make some plays when I had the ball in my hands.”
Williams, a Southern Cal commit, caught five passes for 175 yards and two touchdowns—the scores came on a 38-yard and a 51-yard catch. He also ran for two one-yard touchdowns.
“In the biggest games, your best players are supposed to step up, and that’s what Marlon did tonight,” McGill coach Caleb Ross told AL.com.
McGill, the No. 1 team in 7A, is ranked No. 6 in USA Today’s Super 25 Computer Rankings and No. 1 in AL.com’s Power 25 poll. The Yellow Jackets have two wins over the No. 1 team in 6A—Spanish Fort (24-3) and Blount.
The closest the team has come to losing this year was a triple-overtime win over Davidson. In fact, the last team to beat McGill was Blount last year, and Williams said the team was out for revenge.
“Our state title rings read 13-1,” Williams said. “It burned in us a little bit.”
