McGill moves to No. 22 on national poll
MOBILE, AL (WNSP) — McGill-Toolen, the No. 1 team in the state, is moving up in the national picture.
MaxPreps.com ranked the Yellow Jackets at No. 22 on their Xcellent 25 national High School football poll, up one spot from last week. They are the only team from the state of Alabama to be listed in the rankings.
The site has McGill listed as their No. 2 team in Alabama, behind Hoover, whose only loss came to the No. 2 team in Texas, Allen. The defending 7A champs moved up despite not playing last week, one of three teams to do so.
No. 10 Mallard Creek, in Charlotte, North Carolina, stayed in the same spot, but No. 8 Grayson of Loganville, Georgia, moved up one spot as well.
McGill’s last game was on Sept. 2, when it beat Murphy 43-0 on WNSP’s High School Football Game of the Week. Its other wins came from a triple-overtime game against Davidson and a 24-3 victory over Spanish Fort in the first WNSP Game of the Week.
Of its opponents, only Murphy is not listed on the MaxPreps top 25 Alabama rankings. Spanish Fort is listed at No. 15, and Davidson is No. 12.
Blount and Theodore are the other local teams in the rankings, at Nos. 10 and 25, respectively. Both teams play McGill: the Yellow Jackets go to Blount Sept. 23, and they visit the Bobcats on Oct. 21.
This week, McGill travels across the bay to take on the Foley Lions at 7 p.m. in Ivan Jones Stadium.
