Hitting the beach this Memorial Day? Never forget.

It’s 5 o’clock on Friday — the beginning of a long holiday weekend.

Kids are beginning to get out of school for the summer.

The BayBears are in town the next three days, including a spectacular fireworks show at Hank Aaron Stadium tonight.

Mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-80s are forecast through Monday, which means our Gulf Coast beaches will be bustling with activity.

But don’t forget the meaning of this Memorial Day weekend.

My good buddy J.D. Crowe, one of the best cartoonists in America, has showcased a collection of his most touching Memorial Day cartoons. One showed American soldiers, some obviously dead or wounded, storming a beach during battle.

On this Memorial Day Weekend let’s remember that this is a day set aside to honor the men and women who have died while serving our country. If not for the sacrifice of many there would be no games.  We are forever indebted to those who serve and for sure to those who lost their lives doing so.

So go enjoy the beach, the BayBears and the sun.

But also make sure to pause and celebrate the real reason for this 3-day weekend and the brave men and women who made it possible.
