Football distracts from other Alabama sports that need to tighten up

I know all we’re supposed to care about in this state is college football. And when there’s no real football going on we’re supposed to obsess over spring football.
I understand the sentiment.

But there are other college sports going on, even if the people in the athletic department at Alabama would rather you not notice.
While Nick Saban was showing off what looks like another national championship contender at Bryant-Denny Stadium, the rest of the Alabama athletic teams were having perhaps the worst weekend in program history.

First, the highly rated gymnastics team greatly underachieved at the national meet. The Tide was supposed to be one of the six teams competing for the championship Saturday but they were eliminated during Friday’s preliminaries.

The Alabama baseball teams lost 19-5 Friday night to rival Auburn. And that wasn’t the most embarrassing performance of the series. Auburn went on to sweep a doubleheader Saturday 5-0 and 20-5, meaning the Tigers outscored the Tide 44-10 for the weekend.

The Alabama softball team was swept by the program’s second-biggest rival, losing to Tennessee 1-0 and 13-3. The final game of the series is tonight.

Overall, it was a disastrous weekend for Alabama. But, hey, football!
