We see it almost ever season, since Nick Saban took over at Alabama, that a quarterback transfers in order to get more playing time. Phillip Sims was the last to do so, transferring to Virginia, now backup QB Phillip Ely looks to be the next.

With 4-star recruit Cooper Bateman already on campus, as an early enrollee, signs pointed to Ely seeking out other options for playing time. AJ McCarron will return for one more season, while Bateman will likely redshirt as the quarterback of the future. Ely served as the third string Quarterback for Alabama during their 2012 National Championship season, behind Blake Sims.
