The New Orleans Saints have acquired Linebacker Barrett Ruud from the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for an undisclosed future draft pick.

Rudd is best known for his days in Tampa Bay, after being selected in the second round of the 2005 Draft.

He signed with the Seahawks back in April, but quickly became expendable with the emergence of Seattle’s second round pick Bobby Wagner. The former 2011 WAC Defensive Player of the Year has already made a name for himself in camp, including starting both of Seattle’s pre-season games.

Ruud will take over at middle linebacker after David Hawthorne suffered a meniscus tear in the Saints’ first pre-season game. Depth at the linebacker position will be key this season for a unit that will be relied on more than usual in the absence of Sean Payton’s offensive presence.

Rudd appeared in only nine game with the Titans last season, registering 57 tackles and one interception. His 2011 totals were half of what he produced in his previous four seasons in Tampa.
