OPELIKA, Alabama — The Antonio Goodwin trial is likely to get underway with opening statements this afternoon, and the list of potential witnesses is filled with people who have ties to Auburn.Goodwin is the first of four former Auburn players to go to trial on armed robbery charges. How many of the coaches or players will testify — if any at all — remains to be seen. Prosecutors have derided the defense’s witness list as a fishing expedition.
The defense has served head football coach Gene Chizik, running backs coach Curtis Luper, receivers coach Trooper Taylor, head baseball coach John Pawlowski, and current football players Emory Blake, Justin Delaine, Onterio McCalebb with subpoenas.
Subpoenas for senior associate athletic director Rich McGlynn and two other Auburn officials were resolved by an agreement reached between Auburn University and Goodwin’s attorney earlier this morning.According to court documents, all the subpoenas were served on April 2, except for Chizik and Luper, who were served last Thursday.
The state has had several current and former players listed as witnesses for almost a year. Current players DeAngelo Benton and Anthony Morgan and former players Neiko Thorpe and Mike Dyer are listed as state witnesses. Attorneys were expected to wrap up jury selection after lunch.
