MOBILE, Alabama — Vigor defensive lineman Darius Philon committed to play college football at the University of Alabama today, apparently ending a topsy-turvy recruiting process for the defensive lineman.
Philon announced his decision this morning.
“I really wanted to go where I feel comfortable, and I’m more familiar with Alabama’s campus than Auburn,” Philon said today.
Philon, a 6-foot-2, 260-pounder who is No. 15 on the Press-Register’s Elite 18, committed to Auburn in May, but changed his mind and re-opened his recruitment 2 months later. He eventually picked Alabama over Auburn, Mississippi State, Kentucky and others.
Verbal commitments are non-binding, and players cannot sign scholarship paperwork until February.
Philon is Alabama’s 18th commitment for the Class of 2012, according to Rivals, and he joins Daphne’s Ryan Anderson and Thomasville’s Tyler Hayes as local players in this year’s class.
Philon follows several other Vigor players who have headed to Alabama in recent years, including defensive back B.J. Scott (now at South Alabama), running back Jalston Fowler and receiver Marvin Shinn.
