MOBILE, Alabama — Alabama signee Bobby Wyatt fired a Country Club of Mobile record 14-under 57 on Wednesday in the second round of the AGA State Boys Junior Championship.
Wyatt, the former UMS-Wright star, shot a 26 on the front nine, which included an eagle, seven birdies and a par. He just missed finishing with a birdie on the 18th, settling for a par.
The previous Country Club record was 63 and the previous record for a round in this tournament was 61. Par for the course is 71.
So how low did he go?
It’s possible Wyatt’s score set a world record as the lowest score in competitive play on a golf course of more than 6,500 yards, which the Guinness Book of World Records uses as the standard.
The course as played by Wyatt today measured 6,643 yards.
Kris Wasylowich of Lethbridge, Alberta, posted a 57 on his home course, Paradise Canyon, in May, 2006. Wasylowich played the front nine in 27, and the back nine in 30, records show.
But though 57 was recorded from tees that played 6,800 yards, his 57 is not considered the world record by Guinness because it was posted in a friendly round, not during competition.
