AUBURN, Alabama — It was just another day at the office for Auburn coaches Sunday as they entertained recruits and reviewed how Alabama beat the Tigers 42-14 Saturday.

That meant there was no movement on the coaching staff.

Gene Chizik didn’t address his assistants by name Sunday, but it was clear he was talking about offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn about the possibility of someone landing a head coaching job.

“There are going to be guys who are going to be sought after as head coaches. There will be different variables,” he said.

Overall, Chizik said, “I put a priority on staff continuity.”

As far as possible changes, he said, “I haven’t given it a lot of thought. I have definitely a plan in place if it happens.”

Chizik said he’ll assess his assistants — but he says that’s not usual. He said he’ll assess the overall program.

“That includes assessing everything. Coaches, players, trainers. Everything. We were 14-0 last year and I did the same thing,” he said. “I assessed every single person in this program when we 14-0. I assessed every person, including myself.”

**On the loss to Alabama, Chizik said the loss was no better after watching the game film.

“Very disappointing,” Chizik said.

He said Alabama is “obviously a very good football team.”

**Chizik said the one-sided SEC losses were also disappointing.

“Regardless of what the rest of the records are, anytime you get beat against a Georgia or Alabama, very unfavorably like we did, it is very disappointing,” he said. “The losses that we did have that were lopsided against very good football teams.

“We said from the beginning our margin of error is very small. When we played in those games when they were lopsided, we did things we cannot do.”

**Looking ahead to whether he’ll throw the quarterback race open in spring practice:

“I consider having a wide-open race everywhere, every position,” he said.

**Chizik said the players would take the next two weeks off for academics while the Tigers await their bowl destination.

**Chizik said he hopes true freshman linebacker Kris Frost will be able to get in some bowl practice time. He won’t play, but it’d be a bonus.

“He’s trying to work himself into that. He’s one of the guys who will be able to do something during bowl practice,” Chizik said. “We know he’s a great athlete, and can probably play anywhere at the linebacker positions we want.”

**On offensive lineman Shon Coleman, who has battled cancer.

“I think he’s doing medically really well. It sounds he doing well in his treatment. IT’s been very encouraging, but what that means on him playing, ever playing,” Chizik said he wasn’t sure.

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — UAB head football coach Neil Callaway will not return for his sixth season as the program’s head coach.

While the school announced Callaway resigned tonight, a UAB official said this afternoon that Callaway was fired in a meeting this morning with Athletics Director Brian Mackin.

In Mackin’s announcement, he said the two parties “mutually agreed’ to part ways.

“I met with Coach Callaway earlier today and we mutually agreed that his tenure as our football coach will not be extended,” said Mackin. “I want to thank Neil for his service during his five years as head coach of our football program. There have been many positives attained in his time as head coach, especially the improvement in our APR scores and overall academic success the past several.

“However, we have not experienced the level of success on the field that we all desire and expect for this program.”

Callaway said on Sunday that he didn’t want to answer questions but he did give a brief statement.

Here’s what he said: “I appreciate the opportunity that UAB has given me to be a head coach. It’s something that I’ve wanted to do and they’ve gave me that opportunity and I do appreciate it. I thank all the support people, (trainer) Mike Jones and (equipment manager) Bryan Coutras and (strength coach) Steve Martin, all of them did an outstanding job. I really want to thank the coaching staff and the players. We’re disappointed in the win-loss record but, at the same time, the circumstances we had to work under, I think we did an outstanding job.”

Callaway was 18-42 in his five seasons as the head coach. His tenure ended with a 38-35 loss to Florida Atlantic on Saturday. FAU went into the weekend with an 0-10 record. The week before, the Blazers upset then-No. 21 Southern Mississippi at home for one of the program’s biggest victories.

The school is expected to hold a press conference Monday to address the coaching change.

NEW YORK — The voters in The Associated Press college football poll are clear on which two teams they believe are the best in the country.

LSU is the unanimous No. 1 for a third consecutive week and Alabama received all the second-place votes for a second straight week.

The SEC West powers are on course for a rematch in the BCS championship game on Jan. 9 in New Orleans.

Alabama (11-1) finished its regular season with a 42-14 victory against Auburn on Saturday, a day after LSU (12-0) beat Arkansas 41-17 to clinch a spot in the Southeastern Conference title game against No. 12 Georgia.

At this point, even with a loss to the Bulldogs in Atlanta, LSU might move on to the national championship game.

Oklahoma State moved up to No. 3 in the Top 25 during an off week, taking advantage of Arkansas’ tumble from No. 3 to No. 6 after the Razorbacks lost at LSU on Friday.

Stanford (1,281) is No. 4, just five points behind Oklahoma State (1,286). Virginia Tech is No. 5.

In the USA Today Coaches’ Poll, which is used to calculate the BCS standings, Virginia Tech is third, two points ahead of No. 4 Stanford. Oklahoma State is fifth.

Houston (12-0), the only other undefeated team in major college football, is No. 7 in the AP poll. The Cougars play No. 24 Southern Mississippi in the Conference USA title game on Saturday, with a chance to earn their first BCS bid, and the league’s first spot in the Bowl Championship Series, too.

Oregon was No. 8 and Boise State and Southern California are tied for ninth. There are only seven points separating Arkansas (1,060) and Boise State and USC (1,053).

Michigan State was No. 11. The Spartans will play No. 15 Wisconsin in the Big Ten title game on Saturday.

No. 13 Oklahoma visits Oklahoma State and the winner takes the Big 12 title.

South Carolina was No. 14, giving the SEC five teams in the rankings.

Kansas State was No. 16, followed by Michigan, TCU, Baylor and Nebraska.

No. 21 Clemson takes a two-game losing streak into its Atlantic Coast Conference title rematch against Virginia Tech.

West Virginia re-entered the rankings at No. 22 and is in the running, along with Cincinnati and Louisville, for the Big East championship.

Penn State dropped three spots to No. 23.

Florida State moved back into the rankings at No. 24.

Falling out this week were Notre Dame, Georgia Tech and Virginia.
