LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles Lakers forward Ron Artest wants to change his name to Metta World Peace.

ArtestArtest’s attorney filed a petition in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday seeking the change. The 31-year-old NBA star was born Ronald William Artest Jr.

In the court documents, Artest cites personal reasons for wanting to make the change.

An Aug. 26 court date was set to consider the petition.

The petition filing was first reported by celebrity website TMZ.

Artest’s career has been filled with ups and downs. He helped the Lakers win the NBA championship a year ago and in April he received an award for outstanding service and dedication to the community.

He has testified before Congress to support mental health legislation.

Artest may be best known for triggering the most notorious brawl in NBA history when he jumped into the stands and attacked a fan while playing for the Indiana Pacers in November 2004. He was suspended for the rest of that season.

More on the Lakers

Lloyd Bernard Free, who played in the league from 1975 to 1988, had his first name legally changed to World in 1981. A friend had given him the nickname because of his 44-inch vertical leaps and 360-degree dunks.

In the NFL, Cincinnati Bengals star Chad Johnson legally changed his last name to Ochocinco in August 2008. The name means “eight five” in Spanish.

“It brought a smile to my face,” Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said of Artest’s planned name change. “It’s been done before. … So, other than that, I don’t really have a comment.”

The GM was then asked if he had a preference as to whether the back of Artest’s jersey says “Peace” or “World Peace” next season.

“I’m an advocate of World Peace,” Kupchak quipped.

NEWARK, N.J. — Kyrie Irving traveled just a few miles down the road to become the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft. The players that followed him came from across the globe.

Loudly cheered by family and friends not far from where he starred at St. Patrick’s High School in Elizabeth, Irving showed no signs of the toe injury on his right foot that limited him to 11 games last season as he walked up the stairs to shake hands with commissioner David Stern.

“I didn’t have any doubts about going to No. 1. I was looking to the organization to pick who they felt was the right choice,” Irving said. “But now to this moment, from being a fan of the NBA draft and now being drafted, it’s a special feeling in my heart and knowing that my friends and family were together, it’s a memory I’m going to remember for the rest of my life.”

Three of the first six players taken were from Europe, capitalizing on the absence of some American college players who might have gone in their spots and made this a stronger draft. It was the first time four international players who didn’t play at a U.S. college were selected in the lottery.

Cleveland got the NBA draft running by making Kyrie Irving the No. 1 pick. The night’s story lines included a three-team trade and a record four international players taken as lottery (1 through 14) selections.

Even Erving has international ties. He was born in Australia while his father, Drederick, played professionally there and said he might be interested in playing for the Australian national team.

After grabbing him with their first No. 1 pick since taking James in 2003, the Cavs used the No. 4 selection on Texas forward Tristan Thompson. They were the first team since the 1983 Houston Rockets with two top-four picks. Thompson, who is from Toronto, only played one year with the Longhorns, averaging 13.1 points and 7.6 rebounds.

The Minnesota Timberwolves, fresh off bringing guard Ricky Rubio of Spain into the fold, took Arizona forward Derrick Williams with the No. 2 pick. The Utah Jazz then took Turkish big man Enes Kanter third with the

AUBURN, Alabama — Russell Wilson isn’t saying whether he’ll return to college football at Auburn or Wisconsin, but the former North Carolina State quarterback is offering a little insight about the sport that’s in season.

The second baseman for the Asheville Tourists told Minor League Baseball.com that he’s “doing what I can to improve every single day. That’s my mind-set. Some days are tougher than others, but I’m trying to take the good with the bad and maintain an even keel. It’s been tough at times, but I’m enjoying it.”

Wilson, according to the story, “has politely declined to discuss with the media his plans.”

Wilson passed for 3,663 yards and 28 touchdowns at N.C. State last year. He’s eligible to play football this season, and he’s visited Auburn and Wisconsin.

Auburn’s second semester of summer school begins next week, and there’s a thought he needs to be on campus then. Officially, and unofficially, nobody at Auburn mentions him. But his name won’t go away and, despite another semester of summer school starting again next week, there is no deadline for his arrival.

Wilson was a fourth-round pick by Colorado, but it’s been a struggle since he’s signed. Wilson hit .230 at Tri-City before returning to N.C. State for football practice. At Ashville, he hit .209 through the end of May, but has hit .255 in June. He has struck out in 82 of 181 at-bats.

Still, according to the Minor League Baseball.com story, Ashville manager Joe Mikuik says Wilson has worked hard. The story says Wilson shows up for work at 11:30 a.m. for a 7:05 p.m. game.
