NEW YORK — Turns out Wild Thing’s fastball had a little extra juice.

Actor Charlie Sheen tells Sports Illustrated in its latest issue that he took steroids “for like six or eight weeks” while filming the 1989 movie “Major League.” He adds that the performance-enhancing drugs helped his fastball go from 79 mph to 85 mph.

Sheen played fireballing relief pitcher Ricky “Wild Thing” Vaughn, whose wayward pitches were often “jussst a bit outside,” as Bob Uecker’s character, radio broadcaster Harry Doyle, sarcastically announced during the hit comedy.

Sheen, who has made recent headlines for erratic behavior and his firing from the show “Two and a Half Men,” says it was the only time he took steroids and they made him a bit more irritable than normal.

MOBILE, Alabama — If the Westside Little League 11-12-year-old all-stars want to earn a berth in the Little League World series later this summer, the team must win on the baseball diamond and in the courtroom.

Mobile County Circuit Court Judge John Lockett issued a temporary restraining order Wednesday afternoon which paves the way for Westside’s 10-, 11- and 12-year-old all-star teams to begin district tournament play on July 5. The court action is the latest turn in the local group’s dispute with Little League International.

“The court hereby finds that Westside has demonstrated a liklihood of success on the merits, the threat of irreparable harm if the temporary restraining Order is not granted, that the threatened injury to Westside outweighs any harm to the Defendant, Little League Baseball, Inc., and that granting the injunction will not disserve the public interest,” the judge’s order reads.

Little League International spokesman Steve Barr learned of the judge’s decision when contacted by the Press-Register and said the organization generally doesn’t comment on litigation. Efforts to reach Michelle Arbitrio, Little League’s attorney, at her White Plains, N.Y., office failed.

A hearing is scheduled for July 8 in Lockett’s courtroom to further rule on the dispute.

AUBURN, Alabama — Wisconsin coach Brett Bielema welcomed quarterback Russell Wilson to his football team today.

The former former N.C. State quarterback said last week he’d pick Wisconsin or Auburn, or continue his minor league baseball career.

He’s chosen the Badgers.

“Russell will come in and compete for the starting quarterback position,” Bielema said on the Wisconsin athletic web page.

ESPN originally reported Wilson had picked Wisconsin.

His baseball team, the Asheville Tourists, said today he had left.

Wilson passed for 8,545 yards and 76 TDs in three seasons at N.C. State. He’s eligible to play this season because he graduated in three seasons. Wilson will make his announce on ESPN’s College Football Live at 2:30 p.m., Central time.

Auburn did not announce a starting quarterback after spring practice following a battle between Barrett Trotter and Clint Moseley. Freshman Kiehl Frazier has since joined the competition in summer workouts.

The Tigers need a starter to replace Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton.
