Raymond Cotton, who led Faith Academy to an AISA final as a junior before moving to Maryland, is coming back to Mobile.

Cotton received his release from Ole Miss on Thursday and plans to sign with South Alabama, according to his father, Raymond Cotton Sr.

“Even though he competed for the starting job, he just never felt comfortable (at Ole Miss),” the elder Cotton said Thursday evening. “He had many options, but he said he was going to be happiest in Mobile, Alabama. … He’s excited about becoming a Jaguar.”

Cotton’s father said the release from Ole Miss was good only for South Alabama. USA officials could not comment Thursday as no scholarship papers have yet been signed.

Cotton, who originally committed to Auburn before changing his mind and signing with Ole Miss, threw for 2,243 yards and 24 touchdowns at Fort Meade, Md., as a senior. He threw for 178 yards and two scores in the Grove Bowl spring game, but was hampered by a partially torn labrum and came out of spring drills No. 2 on the depth chart behind sophomore Nathan Stanley.

JUCO transfer Randall Mackey is the only other quarterback on Ole Miss’ roster, although several outlets are reporting that suspended Oregon signal-caller Jeremiah Masoli is set to transfer in as a graduate student and join

The New Orleans Saints announced that they have agreed to terms with free agent quarterback Patrick Ramsey (one-year deal) and third-round draft choice Jimmy Graham (four years). Financial terms were not disclosed.

Ramsey, 31, is expected to compete with second-year pro Chase Daniel for the backup job behind Drew Brees. The addition of the former Tulane standout has been long anticipated, but the Saints weren’t allowed to add any more unrestricted free agents before last week because of new league rules put in place this year.

Ramsey, 6-2 and 225 pounds, was a first-round draft pick of the Washington Redskins in 2002, though he has spent the majority of his career as a journeyman backup. In nine NFL seasons, the Ruston native has passed for 5,930 yards, 35 touchdowns and 30 interceptions, playing for the Redskins, New York Jets, Denver Broncos, Tennessee Titans and Detroit Lions. Ramsey spent last season as a backup with the Titans before being released in October and signing with the Lions in December, when No. 1 overall pick Matthew Stafford was placed on injured reserve.
