mcgillvolleyballMOBILE, Ala. (WNSP) — When it comes to volleyball, Mobile and Baldwin are tops in the state.

Of the six AHSAA classes in which the counties have schools, five local teams sit at the top of the volleyball polls. McGill-Toolen, Spanish Fort, St. Paul’s, Bayside and St. Luke’s were each No. 1 in AL.com’s recent rankings.

On its first weekend of play, McGill won the Juanita Boddie Tournament title, and this past weekend, it won the KSA Tournament in Orlando.

The Yellow Jackets will be hosting the Star Aviation Catholic Cup tournament this weekend. The tournament invited Catholic schools from Georgia and Alabama, including Class 5A St. John Paul II.

According to AL.com, “each of the invited schools finished at least in the semifinal round of their respective division in each state.”

McGill is currently 18-1, tied with fellow No. 1 Bayside Academy. There are three undefeated teams in Bayside’s class, however: No. 2 Montgomery Academy, No. 3 Lexington, and No. 7 Pleasant Valley.

St. Paul’s is currently 11-1, the next-best record of all the No. 1 teams.

In 7A, Murphy came in at No. 10, while in 6A, Daphne and Saraland ranked No. 5 and No. 7 respectively. In class 4A, the only classification not to feature a Mobile or Baldwin team, UMS-Wright represented in the No. 10 spot.
